Tyler Holman drilled a field goal in overtime Friday, Sept. 25, to give Vista Murrieta a 24-21 win over El Camino.
The victory extended the Broncos' winning streak to two games and moved their record to 2-3, according to MaxPreps. Vista Murrieta held steady at No. 14 in the IE Varsity Inland-area football rankings published Monday, Sept. 28, by the San Bernardino Sun.
The Broncos are building the streak with a young roster. Head coach Coley Candaele described the challenge in an Aug. 28 Valley News article after the season-opening loss to Great Oak. "We played well considering that we started three freshmen, eight sophomores, and only had five returning players that have played varsity," Candaele said.
Vista Murrieta opens Big West League play against Centennial at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1.
Girls golf goes 3-0
The Broncos' girls golf team swept all three matches during the week, according to Vista Murrieta Athletics.
Vista Murrieta beat Murrieta Mesa 241-326 on Monday, Sept. 21, then topped Palm Desert 253-287 on Tuesday, Sept. 22. The team posted its best score Wednesday, Sept. 23, defeating Chaparral 217-280.
Wren Saithong led the way. She fired a 34 against Chaparral on Wednesday, the low round of the week, and shot a 37 against Palm Desert on Tuesday. Iri Chen carded a 36 against Chaparral and a 37 against Murrieta Mesa. Kennedy King posted matching 39s against both Murrieta Mesa and Chaparral.
Cross country at Grit and Grind
Vista Murrieta traveled to California State University San Marcos on Saturday, Sept. 26, for the fifth annual Grit and Grind Invitational.
Ethan Fitzgerald paced the Broncos' boys elite squad, finishing sixth out of 102 runners. The boys elite team placed ninth out of 22 teams.
On the girls side, Odina Muhammadiyeva finished 40th out of 164 runners. The girls varsity team placed 10th out of 32 teams.
Also on the field
Vista Murrieta's girls volleyball program swept the week across all three levels. Varsity beat Murrieta Mesa 3-1 and Chaparral 3-2. JV defeated Murrieta Mesa 2-1 and Chaparral 2-0. The freshman squad beat both opponents 2-0.
Girls tennis picked up wins over Murrieta Valley and Murrieta Mesa at both the varsity and JV levels. The JV squad beat Murrieta Valley 14-4 and Murrieta Mesa 16-2.
In flag football, the varsity squad topped Murrieta Mesa 27-7 and JV won 7-6.
