Gregory Lilly, 68, of Winchester was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run causing injury after allegedly striking a Riverside County Sheriff's deputy during a Murrieta traffic stop.

The deputy, assigned to the Southwest Sheriff's Station, was outside his patrol vehicle conducting a stop near Winchester Road and Murrieta Hot Springs Road at about 8:50 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, when a passing vehicle hit him, according to CBS News Los Angeles. The vehicle continued northbound after the collision.

Riverside County Sheriff's deputies stopped Lilly a short distance away. He was arrested at the scene.

The deputy was transported to Inland Valley Hospital with injuries described as unknown at the time, according to CHP Officer Jesus Garcia of the Temecula office, who confirmed the incident in initial reports on Sept. 9. The Riverside County Sheriff's Office later said the deputy was in stable condition.

CHP officers said Lilly may have been driving under the influence at the time of the crash. The cause of the collision remains under investigation by the CHP's Temecula office.

Lilly has been released from custody. He is due in court in October, though a specific date has not been announced.

"During the traffic stop, while outside of his patrol vehicle, the deputy was struck by a passing vehicle and injured," Sgt. Robert Martinez of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department said on Sept. 9, when the agency first confirmed details of the collision to Patch.

The collision prompted a road closure at Winchester Road and Robert Trent Jones Parkway that lasted into the afternoon. Authorities advised drivers to use alternate routes while CHP detectives processed the scene.

The deputy's name has not been released. No update on the deputy's condition beyond stable at the time of transport has been made public.
