Murrieta Valley junior left tackle Vincent Shields holds scholarship offers from six Power 5 programs, including Alabama, Ole Miss and Texas A&M, five games into his first season at the position.

Shields, a 6-foot-6, 285-pound Class of 2028 prospect, also counts UCLA, Arizona State and SMU among his suitors. On3/Rivals rates him a four-star recruit, ranked No. 234 nationally, No. 23 among offensive tackles and No. 16 in California.

Two years ago, Shields was a defensive end.

Former Murrieta Valley offensive line coach Alex Rosenblum convinced Shields to switch to the offensive side after his freshman season. Shields started at right tackle as a sophomore and moved to the left side as a junior to protect quarterback Buck Bachmeier, a sophomore and the youngest of four Bachmeier brothers to play for the Nighthawks.

"He's a freak athlete," Rosenblum said in an August profile by the Los Angeles Times. By the end of the summer, Shields was nearing 20 scholarship offers after just one full season on the offensive line, the Times reported.

Shields told the Times he embraces the physicality the position demands. He has played tackle football since he was 11.

Oklahoma appears to have made a strong early impression beyond the confirmed offers. On3 reported Sept. 15 that Shields had visits to Texas A&M and Oklahoma locked in, with leaders emerging in his recruitment. A separate On3 report said Oklahoma stood out most heading into his junior season.

Southern California News Group analyst Michael Huntley named Shields a player to watch before Friday's game against San Clemente, noting the junior "will have to play well to protect quarterback Buck Bachmeier against a good San Clemente pass rush," according to the Press Enterprise's Week 5 preview.

The Tritons proved tough on Friday, Sept. 25. San Clemente rushed for 258 yards, with running back Charlie Bunker gaining 126 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. Quarterback Preston Beck threw for 202 yards and two scores. The win pushed San Clemente to 5-0 and dropped Murrieta Valley to 2-3, according to MaxPreps.

Shields and the Nighthawks open Southwestern League play against Chaparral at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1. League games against rivals Vista Murrieta, Murrieta Mesa, Temecula Valley and Great Oak follow.
