A vehicle struck and killed Nabil Alsalek, a 73-year-old Murrieta man, on Sunday, Sept. 13, as dense fog blanketed Whitewood Road near Meadowlark Lane.

Murrieta Police officers responded to the crash at approximately 6:55 a.m., according to a department press release. A vehicle was traveling southbound on Whitewood Road when Alsalek entered the roadway and was hit. Police said he is believed to have been out for a jog at the time.

The 52-year-old female driver attempted to swerve to avoid him and stopped immediately to help, the department said. Police do not believe alcohol or drugs were factors.

Alsalek was transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center with major injuries. He did not survive. The Riverside County coroner identified him.

Alsalek's death falls during Pedestrian Safety Month in California. In 2024, 1,090 pedestrians were struck and killed statewide, accounting for 28% of all traffic fatalities, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Office.

"Drivers play a critical role in keeping people walking safe," Deputy Jason Slover said in an Aug. 28 announcement promoting Pedestrian Safety Month. "By staying focused and slowing down … we can help prevent crashes and put safety first on every trip."
