Riverside County sheriff's deputies arrested a Los Angeles man on charges of murder Monday, Oct. 5, and booked him at the Cois M. Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta.

Rashad Populus, 28, had been released on parole just 11 days before the fatal shooting of Shaquilah Howard, a 30-year-old Temecula resident, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies from the Southwest Sheriff's Station responded at 7:34 a.m. to the 28000 block of Colorado Avenue in Temecula after a report of unknown trouble. They found Howard suffering from gunshot wounds. A paramedic pronounced her dead at the scene.

The shooting took place at the La Hacienda Apartments, Patch reported.

The sheriff's Central Homicide Unit took over the investigation and identified Populus as the suspect. Populus had been released on parole Sept. 24 after serving time for a conviction for assault with a firearm, the sheriff's office said. The killing occurred 11 days later.

Investigators enlisted the Riverside County District Attorney's Gang Impact Team and the sheriff's K-9 Unit to track Populus. They located him in Oxnard shortly after 5 p.m. Monday and took him into custody without incident, according to Patch.

Populus faces charges of murder and violation of parole.

Authorities believe Populus is the father of Howard's child, Patch reported. Howard's mother said on social media that Howard leaves behind an 8-year-old child. Neither detail appears in the official sheriff's release.

Populus is scheduled to appear Thursday, Oct. 8, at the Southwest Justice Center, according to Patch. The sheriff's office has not confirmed that date.

Sgt. Carlos Mendoza is supervising the case for the sheriff's office. The investigation remains open, and the department said no further details would be released at this time.
