A vegetation fire burned 35 acres and destroyed one structure near the Murrieta area Tuesday evening, Oct. 6, before firefighters stopped its forward spread.
The Carancho Fire was reported at about 5:59 p.m. in the 26800 block of Frens Road in unincorporated Temecula, according to CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department. The blaze burned through a rural stretch of southwest Riverside County near the San Diego County line.
By 9:50 p.m., the fire was 10% contained and its forward rate of spread had been stopped, the department said. No evacuations or injuries were reported.
CAL FIRE said crews would remain on scene overnight to improve containment lines and mop up along the perimeter. The 9:50 p.m. post was the department's final scheduled update of the evening unless conditions changed.
Large firefighting response
Earlier in the evening, CAL FIRE had estimated the fire could grow to 150 acres, Valley News reported. A total of 139 personnel were assigned to the incident, including 24 engines, two helicopters, one bulldozer, three hand crews, one water tender and 10 other resources, according to Valley News citing CAL FIRE.
Night-flying helicopters assisted ground crews in the initial attack, CAL FIRE said. Air tankers from across California also flew suppression missions as conditions allowed, according to Valley News. The North County Fire Protection District joined the firefight, CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department Capt. John Clingingsmith told Patch.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation as of Tuesday evening.
