Students and coaches from St. Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic School played a fundraising basketball game inside the Los Angeles Clippers' Intuit Dome on Saturday, Aug. 29.
The co-ed squad from the Temecula/Murrieta-area school faced off against a team of Knights of Columbus members in a game organized by Michael Huerta, a member of Knights of Columbus Council 14554 at St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta in Winchester. The students-and-coaches team played as the Golden Squires, while the Knights of Columbus side took the floor as the Purple Knights, Valley News reported.
The team names weren't just for fun. Because the game fell outside the CIF basketball season, St. Jeanne players could not officially represent the school on the court.
"It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," Huerta told Valley News.
St. Jeanne de Lestonnac was founded in 1993 by the Sisters of the Company of Mary and moved to its current campus in September 1999. It is the only co-educational private Catholic school in the Temecula/Murrieta area and offers 12 CIF athletic programs.
For one August afternoon, a group of young Murrieta-area players had a professional basketball court to themselves.
The fundraiser's beneficiary and the amount raised were not disclosed in available reports.
