Murrieta is one of just 441 agencies in the U.S. and Canada to hold a rare national finance award for the second straight year.

The city earned the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Triple Crown Award again, according to a city press release published Oct. 20. Fewer than 1% of local governments receive the distinction, the city said.

The Triple Crown combines three separate GFOA programs: the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting, which recognizes annual financial reports that go beyond minimum accounting standards; the Popular Annual Financial Reporting Award, which honors reports written so residents can understand government finances; and the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award, which covers budget documents that serve as policy guides, financial plans and communication tools. The GFOA established those programs between 1945 and 1991.

The GFOA's Triple Crown Winners list includes Murrieta among its 2024 honorees. The city credited its Finance Department for the achievement in a Facebook post, and Valley News covered the announcement Oct. 29.

Residents can view the full list of Triple Crown winners on the GFOA's website.
