A Riverside County sheriff's deputy is in stable condition after a hit-and-run driver struck him during a traffic stop Wednesday, Sept. 9, in Murrieta.

The deputy, assigned to the Southwest Sheriff's Station, was conducting a vehicle stop at Winchester Road and Murrieta Hot Springs Road shortly before 9 a.m. when a passing motorist hit him and fled, Patch reported, citing Officer Jesus Garcia of the California Highway Patrol's Temecula office.

The deputy had stepped out of his patrol vehicle when the collision occurred.

"During the traffic stop, while outside of his patrol vehicle, the deputy was struck by a passing vehicle and injured," Sgt. Robert Martinez of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department said.

Paramedics transported the deputy to Inland Valley Hospital. Garcia said the injuries were listed as unknown at the time of transport. The Riverside County Sheriff's Department later said the deputy was in stable condition.

The driver fled.

Garcia said CHP officers arrested the driver shortly after the collision. Neither the deputy's name nor the suspect's name had been publicly released, according to the Patch report. No charges against the arrested driver had been publicly announced as of Friday, Sept. 11.

The CHP assumed the collision investigation and is working to determine what happened at the intersection.

The crash forced a closure on northbound Winchester Road near Robert Trent Jones Parkway. CHP Temecula posted a traffic advisory on X at 10:35 a.m. Sept. 9 noting the closure. Sgt. Matt Schmidt of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department urged drivers to use alternate routes while crews worked the scene.

All northbound lanes of Winchester Road at Murrieta Hot Springs Road reopened by 11:30 a.m., CHP Temecula said in a follow-up post on X.
